Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Biological Sciences, or a related field; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and two years of experience in a public health, human services or health related program/organization; OR four years of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in a public health or healthcare setting; professional experience communicating patient results to healthcare providers; coursework in clinical genetics or public health; experience working with sensitive patient data; experience writing or contributing to production of educational materials.

Responsibilities

The Public Health Specialist I will work in the NYS Newborn Screening Program. The incumbent will perform short- and long-term follow up for infants who screen positive for congenital cytomegalovirus. Responsibilities will include verifying and coordinating timely referral of screen positive infants for clinical evaluation and diagnosis; collecting and tracking diagnoses and clinical data for infants referred for follow-up; identifying and tracking individuals ineligible for the study; assisting with development and distribution of new educational materials for parents and healthcare providers; and assisting with certification of Specialty Care Centers.

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
